IGN impressions on map editor and singleplayer

 Tuesday 19 August 2008 - 17:51:26 | Achilles

Accompanied with the two new video's, IGN have also published a new article in which they describe their first impressions of the map editor and also do some additional singleplayer impressions.

IGN not only had a glimpse at the Xbox360 editor but also the PS3 and PC map editors. As far as the console editor go, Ubisoft will provide space online to publish maps on which anyone connecting to a server can download. There is a limit though:
"As of right now Ubisoft is saying each player will be limited to publishing five maps, though you can create as many as you have space for. If a user demonstrates they can produce high-quality work, Ubisoft might consider expanding their individual publish limit."

Overall IGN is quite impressed by Ubisoft's efforts:
"Overall, after trying it out for a little while, it seems like Far Cry 2's map editor will provide players with a powerful toolset wrapped in an easy-to-use interface, and should definitely be something to look forward to. With the right amount of creativity and understanding of online first-person shooter gameplay dynamics, it should be pretty easy to make some appealing, engaging maps."

As for the singleplayer campaign we learn a few new things from the interview as well, for example that Far Cry 2 will have bus stops!
" A few bus depots are scattered around the game world as well, which you can instantly travel between."

There is also more info about how the malaria is visualised in Far Cry 2:
"And, since your character is affected by malaria, you'll also need to pause from time to time to consume meds, as otherwise the screen will become more and more blurred with a yellow glow and eventually go dark, meaning you passed out."

Further on there is more new and detailed information on side missions and weapon purchase and storage.

Altogether the new article on IGN is very worthwhile reading. Check it out here.

Far Cry 2 Xbox 360 map editor revealed!

 Tuesday 19 August 2008 - 17:24:32 | Achilles

It has taken a while for Ubisoft to reveal footage of the map editor to the world, but finally it is here. IGN had the honour to expclusively reveal the Far Cry 2 Xbox 360 map editor in a video that plays like somewhat of a guide and an interview with one of Far Cry 2's producers Richard Gaetan.

The map editor looks very intuitive and easy to use which was also said for previous Ubisoft created console map editors. It seems Ubisoft was able to move forward on the good base they already had. We get to see a diverse range of terrain (modification) tools, a noise tool to add ambient sound to your map, day/night time tools and much much more. There is also a nice feature which will prevent users from creating an unplayable map. The map editor will check if all basic needed features such as spawn points etcetera are there and point you towards errors/omissions.

Last but not least Richard confirms that there are for multiplayer modes being DM, TDM, and CTD (Capture the Diamond) which is a sort of capture the flag with a twist apparently. We could not really make out what the fourth mode is for now.

Check out both map editor video's below.

Far Cry 2 custom case design

 Monday 18 August 2008 - 19:18:41 | Achilles

The people over at Coolermaster Smooth Creations have made a really neat custom Far Cry 2 PC case to promote Ubisofts upcoming piece of art.

The case design is really slick and combines some of the Far Cry 2 images that have been made available by Ubisoft and mixes it up very nicely. Hopefully it will be up for order soon!

Check out the Far Cry 2 cases and more and the CSX website.

Who is this guy?

 Monday 18 August 2008 - 18:48:56 | Achilles

Ubisoft's community developer Kimi has put up a new video on the official Far Cry 2 website. In this video she breaks down the latest Jackal trailer into several parts and points out some interesting things in the video. One of the most intriguing parts is a picture we get to see briefly in the video:

What is he doing there?

Kimi point out that the guy to the right is someone who had not appeared in any video before, so who is this guy Kimi wonders....

The question is interesting and with it being so explicitly posed by Kimi causes speculation. Some say he has some resemblance to Jack Carver, you know the main character from Far Cry 1, who got cut out brutally and as far as we know (for now) removed completely from the series. Someone else opted that the character bears some resemblance Far Cry 2's producer Louis Pierre Pharand!

Whoever he may be we hope to find out soon!

Also something no less interesting is the remark by Kimi at the end of the video. We should expect to get the game in our hands in two months from now. We can really start counting down the days.

Check out the full commentary on the Jackal trailer on the Far Cry 2 official website.
